The New Delhi World Book Fair stood out as a defining platform, where we saw a huge influx of readers, thought-provoking ideas, intellectuals and experts. There was a notable shift in the interest of readers, where readers were increasingly inclined towards analytical and research-backed texts. The presence of scientist, Anand Rangnathan became one of its most accomplished moments. The fair went beyond sales, serving as a platform, focusing more on substance, that drew the readers who came to seek clarity and context.
BooksWagon conducted an interview session with Anand Ranganathan during the event, who attended the fair along with his wife and co-author, Sheetal Ranganathan. His presence drew great attention especially around Anand Ranganathan’s latest bestselling title, Forgotten Heroes of Indian Science. The title sparks a renewed discussion around India’s underrepresented scientific legacy. This interaction, and the presence of hug crowd highlighted the relevance of non-fiction books among curious readers.
The Voice behind Scientific Narratives and History
Scientist, author, public commentator, Anand Ranganathan’s work revolves around the spectrums of science, communication, historical analysis and cultural commentary. He has an academic background in science, with his work consistently reflecting a commitment to research, documentation, and structured argumentation. Anand Ranganathan books are characterised by their emphasis on data, archived sources, and coherent logic.
Alongside him, his co-author and wife, Sheetal Ranganathan, is a writer and thinker on her own. She has been associated with literary engagement and intellectual spaces throughout her career.
Why is this genre of writing changing the shift of narratives?
This is an era of opinions and fragmented narratives. Anand Ranganathan plays a crucial role in restoration of depth for public conversations. His writing serves as a revisit to history, science, and socio-political themes. Such books act as a tool, for informed readers and offers more simplified analysis of narratives. This evidence-based writing hence acts as a more resonant genre to the readers. An urge to question, seek evidence, and ask for reasoning has always been the catch for modern-day readers, that clearly highlights the importance of this genre.
Highlights from the conversation at the BooksWagon stall
There was a colossal crowd of thinkers and admirers of science, waiting at the stall for this session with Anand Rnganathan. To all of our surprise, his co-author, wife and another great intellect Sheetal Ranganathan would be accompanying him.
The conversation with the great writing duo began with their inspiring motivation behind their bestselling non-fiction, Forgotten heroes of science. They gave us insights on how the idea for the book was cultivated on a vacation in Kolkata. There they noticed a street name U.N. Brahmacharini Sarani in Kolkata, that made them question as to who could the person be. When they researched, to their great astonishment, they found him to be a great but unrecognised Scientist and doctor. It saddens him as the scientists who actually found the cures of such diseases have not even received Padmashree. That is why his book acts as a tribute to them and their stories.
To end the session, he gave inspiring messages to the readers, especially for the youngsters, he said, “All that matters is what you do!” Everyone was equally delighted and enlightened with knowledge. Hosting such authors is not only a matter of great acquisition of knowledge and wisdom, but a greater exposure to the world of reasoning and analogy.
